Whats going on?
The song from Marvin Gaye is running through my mind. ???What???s going on???? He sings ???You know we've got to find a way To bring some lovin' here today???You know we've got to find a way To bring some understanding here today.??? I agree with those sentiments 1,000 percent. I just don???t know how to do it.
I try to remain calm and positive in a time and place where voicing your opinion; regardless of the tone or lack of specific target far too frequently results in hate speech spewed from both strangers and friends. I am a passionate healer who sometimes finds it impossible to remain quiet in the face of vile ugliness.
So often public attacks (as attackers sit safely behind a screen in todays social media world) are instantly ramped up to a level of spewing sticky, poisonous sludge. Without apparent provocation it appears socially acceptable to defame, condemn, and belittle complete strangers.
I remain baffled. Did we always carry volcanic level anger inside and currently have the means to spew it out without fear of recrimination brought on by a complete lack of accountability? I am old enough to remember debate teams and spirited conversations among friend and neighbors as we struggled to understand a different point of view.
Diversity was interesting, and the debates usually resulted in understanding the ways we are alike, even when at first it appeared we were completely different. I am grateful for the many points of view I have been exposed to in my lifetime. It absolutely makes me a better person.
Spewing hateful, disrespectful, and demeaning personal attacks never crossed our minds back then. Possibly because it would not have been tolerated. Do we have things to be angry about both individually and collectively? Absolutely. The anger and lack of accountability for personal action makes me sad and well, yes???angry.
Throwing rocks and sticks, burning buildings???and bridges, shouting profane and insulting comments will not resolve the issue. Just in case you did not know, what you think upon grows. What you focus soon becomes the only view in your environment. Be bigger than your emotions. Choose intellect. Choose wisdom. Choose kindness. One ugly word left unspoken may not change your world???but it might change mine.
